In Other Words

Jhumpa Lahiri, a London-born American writer of Bengali descent, has created characters in her fiction who wrestle with questions of identity and belonging in a hyphenated world, themes I find deeply relatable. In recent years she moved to Italy, learned the language, and started writing exclusively in Italian. This essay, presented in bilingual form, is about the experience of learning to live “in other words.” I ate it up.
